In many cases, it is necessary to build a remote control system without a power supply. For the DIN-IPC series, an MPPT rgulator has been developed that allows charging of batteries from photovoltaic panels and monitoring of the photovoltaic system via an integrated processor unit, so that status information is always available, as well as from other sensors connected to the system.

The IPC-MPPT is a module for charging batteries from PV panels with a dual phase converter and application of the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) function to recover the maximum power from the panels. The module can be controlled from the DIN-IPC system and the information about the achieved power, voltage and current can be obtained from the module. But it also works independently, e.g. if the battery is discharged and the system is without power, it can start recharging the battery by itself. It includes an output for the battery and an output for any load, which can be disconnected according to the requirements and the state of charge of the battery.

The figure below shows typical usage. A solar panel is connected to the IPC-MPPT, which charges the battery and also connects power back to the input of the IPC-CPUF407 processor unit. An isolated power supply is also inserted to provide galvanic isolation of the PV panel and battery from the rest of the system. In the case of a small system without requirement for galvanic isolation, this power supply can be omitted. However, it is recommended to connect switch and surge protector to the panel input.

 

The IPC-MPPT module can be used to charge 12V, 24V or 48V batteries with 20V, 42V or 72V photovoltaic panels. The wide input voltage range of up to 100V can thus supply enough power for larger systems and gives sufficient reserve for cloudy days. The maximum charging current is up to 10A, the recommended panel power is up to approx. 100W.

It is possible to use both modern Li-Ion batteries (e.g. LiFePo4) and in low temperature environments lead-acid batteries, which are more suitable for use at negative temperatures.

Applications include weather stations, road condition assessment systems, remote sensor systems and data acquisition systems.
